As usual, Tamako scolds Nobita for his laziness and carelessness in school, then threatens to cut him off from his allowance. Returning to his room, Nobita decides to leave and live on his own, when a box falls on him, revealing a flask containing a sprout. Doraemon explains that if you plant a sprout near any house, the person who planted it will live there. Nobita plants a shelter tree near Sunekichi's house and decides to inspect it before running off. While running, a ball hits him and bounces into Kaminari's house, breaking another window. Gian and Suneo demand Nobita return the ball, to which he enters Kaminari's house, takes the ball from him, and gives it to Gian and Suneo. While walking, he meets Shizuka and walks with her down the street until it starts to rain. Then he sets up a shelter tree near another house and brings her here. There they have dinner.

Meanwhile, Doraemon notices that the flask with the sprout is missing and assumes it's Nobita's fault. As soon as the rain stops, Shizuka decides to go home to take a shower. Nobita wants to borrow a TV, but his aunt says they don't have one, so Nobita decides to go home. There, he watches a show about Dracula until Tamako arrives and starts scolding Nobita again, leading to a quarrel, and Nobita decides to leave home forever. He returns to his new owners, but they kick him out. Nobita notices that the shelter tree is missing and has no choice but to return home. He throws a pebble out the window for Doraemon to hear, but he doesn't even notice. Nobita looks up at the moon through tears.

In the final scene, Doraemon is eating dorayaki at the counter.
