The episode starts with Nobisuke Nobi telling Doraemon and Nobita about growing up during World War II. Because of the bombings in Japan, he had to evacuate to the countryside. One day, he met a girl by the riverside who gave him a bar of chocolate and disappeared into the sunset. When Tamako overhears this, she gets mad and demands Nobisuke clear things up.

Nobita and Doraemon go back to the past to find out who the girl was. They find the temple is empty save for a single monk, who laments that everyone is too busy working in the fields to do anything else. In those fields, a younger Nobisuke is berated and beaten by his teacher for his supposed laziness. As a result, everyone else is allowed to take a thirty-minute break but Nobisuke, who collapses from exhaustion. Doraemon proposes that Nobita take Nobisuke's place. He pulls out the Super Gloves and has Nobita wear them while working on the field. When Nobisuke's teacher returns, he slaps Nobita and chastises him for having a "girl's haircut". Doraemon shaves Nobita's hair, which pleases the teacher enough to call off work for the day. Just then, Nobisuke wakes up and runs away, fearing punishment. Doraemon and Nobita return to the tree where they left Nobisuke, only to find he has run away to the riverside. The two hide in a patch of white lilies by the river and wait for the girl to arrive. Doraemon uses the 30 Minute Hair Formula to restore Nobita's haircut.

Nightfall arrives and there is still no sign of the girl. While looking for her, Nobita falls into a pile of manure. Doraemon sprinkles some deodorizer on him to reduce the smell while he gets him some new clothes. However, he ends up getting him a dress, much to Nobita's disdain. Just then, the hair tonic takes effect, giving Nobita long hair. To Doraemon's horror, he looks just like the girl Nobisuke saw when he was young. Just as a depressed Nobisuke is about to walk into the river, the dressed-up Nobita approaches him with a bar of chocolate. Doraemon takes a photo of the event.

Back in the present, Nobisuke is telling Tamako about the girl he saw that way. Nobita remarks that some things are better off as memories, and Doraemon tears up the photo.
