Nobita receives a letter from Suneo airmailed, boasting about his vacation in Hawaii. Furious, Nobita begs his mother to take him on a trip, but his mother expresses her dislike for traveling. Nobita returns to his room, dejected, and begs Doraemon to bring out the "Anywhere Door," but Doraemon explains that traveling by plane or ship is also a part of the fun. Nobita then demands Doraemon produce these, but Doraemon denies them.

Bored, Nobita goes to visit Shizuka, but upon arriving at her house, discovers it's everyone's "Mid-summer Release Day," and that Dekisugi and Gian are also at her house.

Dekisugi begins by presenting his work: photos of the planets he took at night. Nobita exclaims, "It's amazing that you can take photos without going anywhere." Dekisugi replies, "If possible, I'd like to go to those planets," and everyone smiles.

Shizuka went to Hokkaido and brings back "Marigold" from Lake Akan. Dekisugi is initially worried that Shizuka hastaken back the protected original, but Shizuka explains that she only bought a replica for souvenir purposes.

Gian goes to Akiyoshido Cave in Yamaguchi Prefecture and shows off the steatite he has picked from the cave. Since steatite takes millions of years to form, and since picking steatite is illegal, everyone blames Gian, which shocks Gian. Nobita scolds Gian too much (calling the police to arrest Gian), and Gian chases him out of Shizuka's house. Back home, Doraemon reassures Nobita. When Nobita envies others enjoying their fulfilling summer vacation, Doraemon pulls out his "Year-Month Compression Gun" and plans to take Nobita to Hawaii that evening, but he needs to wait until night. That night, Gian arrives at Nobita's house and asks Doraemon to make amend. Doraemon uses the "Anywhere Door" to take Nobita and Gian to Akiyoshi Cave. Gian finds the stalactite he has picked, and Doraemon shoots it, causing it to reform and even become "larger than before," allowing Gian to return home with peace of mind. Nobita then goes to Lake Akan and fires a gun into the water, only to see the marimo grow to unusually large size. To avoid causing a disturbance, Doraemon uses the "Reverse Beam of Light" to restore it to its original size.

Doraemon then takes Nobita to the coast facing Hawaii, confirms its location, and fires a gun in that direction. He then takes out a sampan, and together with Nobita, they row to Hawaii. When Nobita scolds him for doing the impossible, Doraemon explains that Hawaii is moving westward, toward Japan, due to continental drift, and that using the gun will bring Hawaii within reach. Meanwhile, Suneo, enjoying the ocean breeze alone on a Hawaiian beach, suddenly sees someone approaching on a sampan. Upon realizing it's Nobita and Doraemon, he's terrified.

Nobita returns home, overjoyed, and plans to go back. Then, having an idea, he decides to use the gun again and shoots it at the moon to test whether it's moving closer to Earth. Doraemon is shocked when he sees this...
